Irfan Sabir was our guest speaker to mark the beginning of 2017 and the 150th anniversary of Canada and 110th anniversary of the Club. Over 55 members and guests attended the luncheon in the historic Bennett room of the Ranchmen’s Club. Minister Sabir was sworn in as the Minister of Community and Social Services the day prior to his speech. He was previously the Minister of Human Services in the Notley cabinet. The Minister focused his remarks on the central accomplishments of the government including changes to Alberta’s minimum wage, improved funding for education and maintaining an appropriate level of public services during the recession. Sabir also informed the Club of recent accomplishments related to vulnerable populations including improved funding for addressing addiction, homelessness and affordable housing. The open question and answer period was particularly appreciated as the Minister was able to address a number of topics in greater detail. He was lauded by local not-for-profits for his activities and funding commitments. The Canadian Club was pleased to welcome Calgary Public board trustees Judy Hehr and Joy Bowen-Eyre along with an entire table of graduate students from the faculty of social work at the University of Calgary.
